Prince Frederik, the youngest son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg and Princess Julie of Nassau, has died. He was 22.
Frederik died from a rare genetic condition called POLG Mitochondrial disease, his dad announced in a statement shared on the POLG Foundation website.
“ItiswithaveryheavyheartthatmywifeandIwouldliketoinformyouofthepassingofourson,”thestatementbegan.
Inthestatement,RobertrecalledFrederikhad“calledusintohisroomtospeaktohimforonelasttime”onFeb.28.Hesaidthe22-year-old“foundthestrengthandthecouragetosaygoodbye”tohisfamily,includingbrotherAlexanderandsisterCharlotte,amongothers.
“Aftergiftingeachofuswithourfarewells—somekind,somewise,someinstructive—intrueFrederikfashion,heleftuscollectivelywithafinallong-standingfamilyjoke.Eveninhislastmoments,hishumour,andhisboundlesscompassion,compelledhimtoleaveuswithonelastlaugh….tocheerusallup,”Robertwrote.
