WhileIhavespentdecadesinthecorporateworld,someofmymostvaluableleadershiplessonshavecomefrommyexperienceasavolunteerEMSfirstresponder.Inthefield,whenI’massistinginalife-threateningtraumasituationorrespondingtoacaraccident,leadershipisputtothetestunderextremepressure.
ButwhetherI’mpilotinganambulanceonadarkhighwayorguidingmycompanythroughturbulenttimes,theprinciplesremainthesame:Knowyourrole,removethenoise,maintainatruenorth,andharnessthepowerofthecollective.
Firstrespondersmakereal-timedecisionsunderpressure,relyingontrustandcollaboration,andCEOstodaymustembracethesamemindset.WhileIseesomeleadersrevertingtotop-downmanagementinresponsetorapidchangeandshiftingpolicies,thisapproachcanactuallyhinderlong-termsuccess.
