Volunteers, food banks kick off Hunger Action Month in Kentucky

TheproclamationismeanttoraiseawarenessforfoodinsecurityintheCommonwealth.
“I’mlookingforwardtothedaywherewedon’thavetodothisandgatherinthisway,butuntilthen,wehavealotofworkinfrontofus,andI’msohonoredtobeherewiththepeoplethatareinthetrenchesdoingthiswork,servingourfamilieseverysingleday,”Colemansaidattheevent.
NonprofitFeedingKentuckysaysoneoutofeverysixKentuckiansisfoodinsecure.That’smorethan700,000people.
It’sespeciallyaprobleminruraleasternKentuckycommunities.NickyStacyisthefounderoftheHazelGreenFoodProject,whichisbasedintheregion.
“Peoplewhoaremakingitayearago,thistime,they’renotmakingit,theyneedtheextrahelp,”Stacysaid.“Grocerypricesarestillupthere…thepricesaren’tthecheapest,andournearestWalmartorKrogerisaboutanhouroroveraway,andsowehavetopaytheridiculousprices.”
